Author Marketing Plan: Month 5

MCS Blog 4What’s new this month? A list of book clubs that have your ideal readers! This is your 12 month marketing plan that has a low budget and puts you in the best opportunity to succeed. If you haven’t read month one, stop right now and go to that blog so that you can better understand the process.

Budget: $40-$90

To-Do: (Optional) Sign up for the Book Club Package at MCS.

You will receive each month a list of book clubs that fit your target audience, along with a description of each book club and contact information. This is yet another great place to send postcards and Book Kits to increase your sales and build loyal readers.

To-Do: Research the 5 cities that you received from MCS.

In months one through five you received a list of 25 cities that have the largest percentage of your target audience and give you the best chance at selling books.

Since you’re a writer, think about a barter situation to promote your books with companies in each city. For example, work out a deal with a local lawn business that you will write 5 blogs for them if they hand out postcards to all their customers.

To-Do: Research bookstores that you received from MCS.

In months one through five you received a list with hundreds of bookstores in your targeted areas. You should be able to land at least twenty or thirty bookstores if you keep up with your postcards and Book Kits using detailed target audience information.

Also, consider getting your books into stores by doing a consignment deal. If the books sell, then you get paid. If they don’t, then you’ll take them back. The bookstore has nothing to lose except for a little bit of shelf space.

To-Do: (Optional) Submit another book for film or television adaptation review.

On all of your DVD’s, watch the bonus material. A lot times they discuss how a producer or director came across the book, along with the process of adapting to film.

To-Do: Mail postcards to places in your targeted cities.

Keep your lists organized. Mark off which places you sent a postcard and update the contact information as needed. Be creative when looking at possible opportunities. Books can sell anywhere.

To-Do: Send Book Kit to five groups.

If you write horror, look for ghost hunting groups. If you write romance books, there are single groups in your target city. There are also networking groups of all kinds that may be interested in your books, especially if you write non-fiction. (Or, if you’re thinking like a non-fiction author.)

To-Do: (Optional) Send out postcards based on the information from the Things To Do Package at MCS.

There are all kinds of ways to advertise: Online classified ad, circulars, sending information to a booth at a trade show, bulletin boards, direct mail, display ads, or even the Yellow Pages.

Does your audience in a certain city hang out at the zoo? There are specials for businesses to advertise there. Take advantage.

To-Do: (Optional) Based on the Things To Do Package, write and send a press release to 5 media outlets.

Send press releases to the media outlets that you received from MCS and follow the media contacts on Facebook and Twitter. Make comments on their blogs and build relationships so that they will remember you.

Don’t forget the local radio stations for both advertising and commercial spots. Radio has a powerful reach in your targeted city.

To-Do: (Optional) Send postcards or Book Kits using the information sent by MCS for the Youth Author Package.

Make sure to send letters to the libraries on your list and ask that your book be placed in their catalog.

Also, Book Kits will be useful in any school. Just make sure the schools are on your list. Do not waste time and money sending Book Kits to schools that don’t include your IDEAL target reader.12MonthPlan

If you signed up for this package then you are receiving lists of literary agents and publishers that best fit your needs.

In query letters, not many authors will list viable cities, bookstores, clubs, groups, and media outlets. However, you have that information to use and should impress the agents and publishers with your knowledge.

To-Do: Read MCS information sheet.

Read up on the latest trends in technology, ancillary product ideas, along with marketing tips and film adaptation hints.

You are now five months into your marketing plan. The information you have is what publishers use to evaluate markets and sell books in the best locations around the country. Use the information to increase sales and impress literary agents, publishers, and book stores.
